Be Better

Keeping this post pithy today…

I think the opening quote from the Dalai Lama is powerful and poignant enough and it would be madness to disagree with the wisdom conveyed by it. However, I am fairly certain that when most people are given the advice to “be better”, this quote does not come to mind.

I personally strive to be better everyday. My “previous self” is only hours to weeks old, not months or years.

Learning something everyday helps you to be better.

Teaching someone or sharing your knowledge with someone not only helps them be better, but helps you to be better.

Going into your business or place of work and doing something, anything, that builds even a modicum of value helps you to be better.

Spending quality time with your family and friends helps you to be better.

Being a better you everyday is a journey, not a destination and the journey only ends when you pass away or give up. The former is not an option, but the latter is absolutely within your control.

When you wake up in the morning, firstly, be thankful that you likely slept in a nice soft bed in a comfortable house and secondly, think about what you are going to accomplish today to be better than you were when you laid down the night before.

Have a plan to be better. After all, a goal without a plan is just a wish and wishes don’t come true without work.

Problems are just solutions in work clothes.

  1. That’s a fantastic quote and a great way to start this dialog. One of these days I’d like your take on the quote by Jung about the subconscious and the conscious!
