I didn’t always value birthdays.
I did briefly as a child, though my humble upbringing tempered my enthusiasm as I grew older.
When I reached adulthood and was on my own, birthdays just became another day. Later on, it became a minor annoyance.
I didn’t care about nor did I expect any well wishes or gifts. I never understood the ritual of celebrating birthdays. At least not as far as I was concerned.
Two events changed my perspective on birthdays…
The first being meeting my wife. The second being my open heart surgery a little over two years ago. 25 October 2022 is the day of my “rebirth.” A second birthday, if you will.
Life is relatively short. We don’t have much time on this planet to spend our time dismissing the significance of reaching another birthday. My wife and my open heart surgery experience taught me to enjoy every moment of every day.
Life is a gift. I am grateful that my wife and my surgery experience taught me to embrace that with gusto.
